William Camargo is a visual artist/arts educator and community organizer born and raised in Anaheim, CA, and working in Chicago. Before becoming a visual artist William worked as a photojournalist for several years covering topics of immigration, gun violence and other social justice issues. His documentary work has taken him to the Mexico/US border, Southern Mexico and Guatemala doing reportage on issues affecting those countries. His work is inspired from his family’s immigration from Mexico and his working class upbringing in a Mexican/American barrio, touching issues of assimilation, identity, gentrification and immigration through photography. In his most recent work, he uses his rasquache aesthetics to bring awareness to issues of gentrification as a social justice issue that has plagued many communities of color across Chicago and the United States.
