Ramon Vallecillos, 23, of Honduras stands for a portrait in Tijuana, Mexico. Mr. Vallecillos arrived in Tijuana with his pregnant wife and their two young children on April 26, 2018 - the day before this photograph was taken. They came as part of the ‘caravan’ of mostly Central Americans fleeing violence in their home countries. Mr. Vallecillos put it this way:

“I came here to look for a better life and give my kids what I didn’t have because in our country life is really hard. Sometimes you can’t even send them to school or bring them to who prepares them more. That is why one leaves our country, to look for a better life, to live better, to live in peace, not to live in violence.”

This portrait is part of a series that I made of people who came in the caravan to request asylum in the United States. I wanted to make a series of ‘regular’ looking photographs of families who have been portrayed as serious threats to US national security. In reality they are just people who, like Mr. Vallecillos, want a better future for their children and many of whose lives are under threat from the gang violence in Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador – places that are unstable and violent in part because of past US military interference in the region.
