Omar - Almudena Toral

The back of Omar, 30, whose last name is withheld to protect his safety, showing a two-week-old wound inflicted by a knife. Omar fled Honduras because gang members occupied his home. On his journey north, he was assaulted by three hooded and armed men outside Chiquimula, Guatemala, while he was walking at night. While trying to escape, he got stabbed in the back. He didn’t realize the wound was so serious initially. After going to a hospital, he found help through a priest who runs a migrant shelter in northern Guatemala. At the shelter they cured his wound regularly. He later crossed the Guatemala-Mexico border with the escort of a religious group and asked for asylum in Mexico. Omar is one of an uncounted number of migrants and refugees who, fleeing from violence back home, meet violence during their journeys to safety in increasingly dangerous routes.

Almudena Toral is a visual journalist with deep interest in issues of migration, violence and post-conflict. This photograph is part of a series in diptych format called Wounds of the Journey, focused on denouncing through explicit and evocative visuals the violence refugees face during their journeys to safety in an effort to counteract the popular narratives that people flee their countries out of choice instead of out of necessity.
