A woman and her seven-year-old granddaughter from Guatemala travel by bus through Oaxaca, Mexico after months of being stuck at a migrant shelter in Chahuites, a small town near the Chiapas–Oaxaca border. After the government announced the Plan Frontera Sur in 2016, which forced migrants off the freight train known as “The Beast”, thousands of migrants were forced to walk the most part of the first 400 km of their journey. This transformed a 3-day dangerous trip into an agonizing journey through jungle and desert that could take up to 3 months.

I’m a visual journalist from México City. Most of my work focuses on human rights violations and social resistance in the aftermath of violence. I have witnessed the journey of dozens of men, women and children crossing Mexico on the way north. The violence they face is chilling: from criminal organizations regarding migrants as merchandise to the utter and absolute betrayal committed by authorities in charge of their protection. Still, people migrate because they have to. And along the way, facing so much adversity, migrants organize and find allies, they manage to keep moving, to resist. https://piedepagina.mx/colaboradores-Ximena-Natera.php
